Paid to Smile -- Growing through Times of Lament

When my daughter was ten years old, my husband paid her to smile.

It was family picture day at church, and she just wasn’t feeling it. Normally a cheerful kid, she wasn’t cheerful that day. She didn’t want to dress up. She didn’t want to have her picture taken. And she certainly didn’t want to smile.

As our turn in front of the camera neared, my husband grew desperate.

  1. Oh how I love these words Ms. Lori, "A smile that doesn’t reach a person’s eyes is a smile in name only." I've long thought that very thought, but didn't know how to express it in words. "Plastered", "Fake", "False", they're all applicable words, but as it's been said (sorry I can't remember who" "... the eyes are windows to the soul." is so very true. I watched other claim-to-be Christians, and some who are but haven't matured their faith greet you with a big smile, but underneath you can also cut the tension. Are they angry at me, themselves, someone, or some situation? Don't they know I'm a Christian brother, and they can share their burdens with me. And for those who "fake it" (look at what a joyful person I am, even though I'm thinking un-joyful thoughts about you right this second), I'll continue praying for you. When God is filling your heart, your joy in the Lord will naturally overflow. Well said ma'am. Thank you, and God's blessings.

    1. You've touched on something very powerful, J.D. Are we creating the kind of faith community where others can share their struggles with confidence, knowing they'll be met with compassion, kindness, and prayer? Or do they have to fake it and struggle alone? Lord, use us to build hospitals for the hurting, now hallowed halls for the holy. THanks for joining the discussion today.
