Hungry for God; Starving for Time

Is Your Light On? What the Neighbors See -- Second in a Series on Prayer

When I take the dog out early in the morning, there's only one light on in the neighborhood.

It shines unobtrusively in the window of my neighbors' house. And though the glow is muted, it is as bright as a lighthouse beacon to me, because I know what it means.

When I see the light, I know my neighbors are praying.

I know they're spending time in God's Word before they start their day. I know they're sharing a devotional or word from some hero of the faith. I know they're orienting their lives to the truth in order to go out into a world full of lies.

I know they're putting God first.

This is a comfort to me, a fellow pilgrim on this journey of faith. It reminds me that I'm not the only one striving to live a godly life in a wicked generation. It reminds me that others are lifting their voices to God because they believe he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. It reminds me that should disaster strike my family or fear strike my heart, I will not be alone. It reminds me that where two or more are gathered, God is there in the midst.

That light reminds me that although the enemy of my soul is alive and well, greater is he that is in us, than he that is in the world. It reminds me that the Light of the world has chosen to place his light in us, his children, so the world might see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven.

This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. . .

How's your light today? I encourage you to let it shine brightly for Him.

You never know who might be watching.

If you enjoyed this devotion, may I tell you about my new book, Hungry for God … Starving for Time, 5-Minute Devotions for Busy Women?

Today's women want to connect with God, but in the craziness of life, it’s just not happening. You want practical, biblical answers to situations you face every day, but you don’t have hours to pore over Scripture.

You need a resource that answers the questions you’re afraid to ask out loud. Questions like:

• Is my situation hopeless?
• If God already knows what he’s going to do, why bother to pray?
• Why have you allowed this to happen to me?
• No one appreciates what I do. Why shouldn’t I quit?

Each devotion begins with a Facetime question and ends with a biblical answer wrapped in a modern day parable. Like a spiritual power bar, Hungry for God … Starving for Time is packed with enough scriptural nutrition to get you through the day. Wherever you are—in break rooms, carpool lines, or wherever you can snatch five minutes of quiet reflection—Hungry for God … Starving for Time, 5-Minute Devotions for Busy Women is for you.

If you enjoyed this post, why not subscribe? I'll send you twice-weekly 5-minute devotions to help nourish your soul.

Hi Lori - I loved this post. It makes one think of what it is our neighbours are seeing when they look our way. I will be keeping that in mind in the future. Thank you for your great comment on my blog, and I will be following your posts as of now too.
    God bless

What a great comfort to know that you are not alone in your praying. I like to think about the Motel 6 commercial "We'll keep the light on for you" when thinking about praying. No matter what time of day or night God's light is on for our worship and prayer.
