Death and Deviled Eggs - How Food Brings Comfort to Hurting Hearts

I never understood the ritual of bringing food after someone  has died.

Because I hadn’t walked through the valley of the shadow of death, adding fried chicken or potato salad to an already overloaded buffet table seemed ludicrious.

Trite.

Paltry.

How could a dozen deviled eggs delete one day’s despair?

And even now, no longer among the uninitiated, standing on the porch gathering my courage to make the visit no one wants to make, the pound cake in my hands still seems sacrilegious.

But I knock,

And I hug,

And we cry a little.

She shows me pictures. Four children. Nine grandchildren. One great-grandchild.
“Fifty-one years,” she says. “He spoiled me.

“He shopped. He fixed things. He even filled my car with gas
.
“He took me to the gas station yesterday to show me how to work those new pumps, and we laughed at how confused I got.

“‘Show me twenty times,’ I said, ‘and I might just get it,’ ”

“I didn’t get 20 times,” she said.

“Just that one.”

And we eat warm pound cake.

And somehow, we are comforted.

You want to connect with God, but in the craziness of life, it’s just not happening. You want practical, biblical answers to situations you face every day, but you don’t have hours to pore over Scripture.

You need a resource that answers the questions you’re afraid to ask out loud. Questions like:

• Is my situation hopeless?
• If God already knows what he’s going to do, why bother to pray?
• Why have you allowed this to happen to me?
• No one appreciates what I do. Why shouldn’t I quit?

Each devotion begins with a Facetime question and ends with a biblical answer wrapped in a modern day parable. Like a spiritual power bar, Hungry for God … Starving for Time is packed with enough scriptural nutrition to get you through the day. Wherever you are—in break rooms, carpool lines, or wherever you can snatch five minutes of quiet reflection—Hungry for God … Starving for Time, 5-Minute Devotions for Busy Women is for you.

  1. You have shown me that even the smallest things in life impact others with compassion and love. Thank you for this.

  2. Robin, I wonder how many "little things" with potentially big impacts we miss because we are waiting around hoping to do the "big" things? Thanks for commenting, and may God bless you as you serve.
